Chicken Age refers to the domestic chicken, the most numerous and most human-shaped vertebrate on Earth.
In this long-term project, I photograph animals, plants, objects and places on location as artefacts of human intervention in nature. From early stone tools through domestication and industrialisation to biotechnology and digital systems.
Future archaeologists may one day identify our epoch by the remains of 80 billion chickens killed and left behind every year. A material marker of our time.
Taking an archaeological perspective, I place seemingly unrelated artefacts side by side to reveal how humans understand, use and transform nature.

This project is supported and inspired by @sarah.darwin, botanist and great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin. I highly recommend her book Das Parlament der Natur (Propyläen Verlag), written together with Johannes Vogel and Boris Herrmann.
"I began to feel rather disgusted with myself for the cruel work I was compelled to carry on — the killing of such lovely creatures, to be stuffed and placed in a museum. It seemed a sacrilege to do this with the birds of paradise, whose splendid plumage and graceful motions seemed to fit them rather for the admiration of men in their native forests than to be shot and preserved in a glass case."Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) Naturalist and co-discoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection. Chapter 38, The Birds of Paradise, in The Malay Archipelago (1869).
